Psion Revo, Palm Pre, and what could have been.
fantastic, device-comprehensive read. i’d actually forgotten about my Psion Revo (smaller version of the 5/5mx the author swoons over). I remember at least one occasion in school where i’d forgotten about a paper or hw (not an infrequent event), so before that class i banged out a two page paper on my revo, snuck into the chemistry stock room which had an hp laser jet with an ir port, beamed it to the printer, and turned it in on time. oh, the f’ing thing even had a modem module too.
It’s amazing how much the Psion 5/5mx (and Revo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psion_Revo ) was ahead of its time. If only their pda unit had survived, or if only palm had given the Pre better hardware and service provider… if only that then we might actually see apple start pushing the boundaries in solving day-to-day problems that otherwise creates a market where the solution becomes a liability, and the product roadmap becomes inherently influenced by fairness induced stagnation (e.g. ensuring devices from last 2 years can run latest iOS, consumer backlash over maps, etc).
i know most think i’m an uber-apple-fanboy, especially if we’ve debated samsung / android vs apple, but there’s little i wish for more than the success of a truly great product over the iPhone. it’s such a shame that google didn’t purchase palm os (and team) and instead left it to HP to bury; one worse, it’s a shame google didn’t write Palm OS (WebOs) in the first place, and instead bought a half-baked rim competitor instead.
